Recycled polyester (rPET) has become the default fabric story for sustainable sportswear — but "recycled" covers a wide range of actual performance and circularity outcomes. Here's what actually differs between rPET running and tennis tops, and what to look for before you buy.
Thermoregulation: Does Recycled Polyester Perform Differently?
Recycled polyester performs identically to virgin polyester in terms of thermal conductivity. The mono-material fibre goes through a closed-loop process. PET bottles are shredded, liquefied, and respun into fibre, then eventually back into fibre again at end-of-life. This recycling process doesn't change the polymer's underlying thermal properties. A well-made rPET top will regulate heat exactly as well as its virgin-polyester equivalent.
What can vary between sportswear garments is knit construction: mesh paneling, grid knits, and zoned ventilation affect breathability far more than fibre origin does. When comparing tops, look at where the ventilation panels sit (underarms, back) rather than assuming "recycled" means any trade-off in performance.
Sustainability: What "Recycled" Actually Means for This Fabric
Fibre origin is a strong sustainability signal, but the full picture depends heavily on what else is blended into the fabric — most commonly elastane, which typically makes up 8–12% of the blend to add stretch, that also increases the product life-cycle.
Elastane creates a real trade-off: it improves fit, seam durability, and garment lifespan, but it's very difficult to separate from polyester once blended, which significantly reduces the fabric's recyclability at end-of-life. This holds true whether the elastane itself is virgin or recycled — the blending is the barrier, not the elastane's own origin.
The most circular sportswear option currently available is a mono-material rPET knit with 0% elastane, which achieves stretch through knit structure alone rather than fibre content. Because there's no elastane to separate out, these garments stay mechanically recyclable. rPET blended with elastane trades some of that circularity for stretch, recovery, and seam durability. It is a reasonable trade-off depending on the top's intended use, but worth knowing without assuming "recycled" means "most sustainable".
Moisture-Wicking: Mechanical vs. Chemical Recycling
Not all recycled polyester is processed the same way, and the method affects wicking performance:
- Mechanically recycled rPET (the more common, lower-cost method) tends to produce shorter, more irregular fibre lengths.
- Chemically recycled rPET breaks the polymer down to monomer level before respinning, producing more consistent fibre quality closer to virgin polyester.
The irregularity in mechanically recycled fibres can affect wicking-channel consistency and increase pilling over time, both of which influence how evenly moisture spreads across the garment as it ages.
A note to add on microfibre shedding: like virgin polyester, rPET sheds synthetic microfibres during washing. Research into the downstream impact on oceans and waterways is still developing, so this remains an open question rather than a settled one — but it's a factor worth weighing alongside the recycled-content story, not a separate issue from it.
Garment Design
Fabric origin matters and construction is what you'll actually feel on a run or on court:
- Shoulder and raglan seams: look for bonded or flatlock construction to prevent chafing over long distances.
- Underarm and side panels: a slightly stretchier blend here reduces stress on seams and improves durability, without needing extra stretch across the whole garment.
- Mono-material stretch knits: as noted above, some brands now build structural stretch into 0%-elastane rPET knits specifically to preserve recyclability — worth flagging as a distinct category from standard rPET-elastane blends.
